This Microscopic Imager photo shows the soil at Opportunity's landing site. It shows an area 3 cm across. The circular granule in the lower left corner is approximately 3 mm across - the size of a raisin.

The soil is a mixture of very fine sand and larger granules. The sand grains are mostly dark grains with a sprinkling of lighter grains. The colur of the granules varies from white to dark grey. The granules also vary in size and shape. The various colours of the soil particles suggest a variety of mineral compositions.

The blue tint in the lower right corner indicates that the image was taken with the dust cover closed.
