The Rover's instrument arm contains:
- a miscroscopic imager for capturing closeup images.
- a Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) for brushing dust from the surface of rocks and for grinding away the weathered surfaces of rocks.
- a Moessbauer Spectrometer for detecting the presence of iron-bearing minerals.
- an Alpha-Particle-X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) for determining the elements present in rock and soil samples.
