A vast universe containing billions of galaxies
Ground Observatories have allowed us to see that the Milky Way is just one
of billions of other galaxies in a vast universe. The galaxies are expandanding
away from each other. The universe must have began expanding 13.7 billion years ago.
Many spiral galaxies have bars, including the Milky Way.
NGC 1300, in the southern constellation
of Eridanus is a fine example of a barred spiral galaxy.
It is about 60 million light years from us.
It is an outlying member of a nearby galactic cluster.
