This image was is part of a 16 inch square plate taken with the 2 meter UK Schmidt Telescope, Anglo-Australian Observatory, Siding Spring. Much more detail appears even on this very low resolution copy of the image. The field of view is 1° x 1°. Move the mouse over the image to display lines drawn between the brighter stars to lead towards the target. Proxima Centauri is indicated by the circle. Click the image to zoom in on a 15' x 15' portion of the DSS image displayed at full resolution. View the full resolution 1° square, 2199 pixel wide, 748 KB file from which the low resolution image displayed here was created.
Note: The wealth of detail in the DSS image is mind boggling. It takes considerable practice to be able to confidently relate stars in the image with stars depicted in star atlases and planetariium programs. |
