This page was created in August 2003. It requires updating to indicate the data
since since gathered and the findings so far published. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Chandra X-Ray space telescope, the European Southern Observatory and the Gemini Observatory have combined forces to gather evidence about the origin and evolution of galaxies. The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) program traces galaxy building all the way back to the infancy of the Universe. Two fields, one in the Northern and the other in the Southern Hemisphere have been selected. Detailed studies have begun.
The Space Infrared Telescope (SIRTF), launched on 25th Aug 2003, will contribute to the survey when fully operational. The successor to the Hubble Space Telescope - the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), will have the capability to see all the way back to when stars began to shine. Links
