The atmosphere glows blue, even at night. Long-exposure photographs soak up light for hours. They can detect the blue starlight scattered by the atmosphere. This long-exposure night photograph shows the stars in the southern sky as trails, because the Earth rotated while the shutter was open. The blue of the sky shows between the trails and lights the telescope dome. |
