Why the Sky is BlueThis image was taken from near-earth orbit on the night-side of Earth. The Sun is rising up from the other side of Earth. A thin crescent of the Earth's surface is bathed in its light. The blue glow of the atmosphere is also visible. The space shuttle and the Hubble Space Telescope are in the foreground. The atmosphere below the spacecraft is facing away from the Sun. The amount scattered blue light redirected from it is minimal. |
