Refraction of light by the atmosphere into Earth's shadow

The Earth's shadow is not completely devoid of light. The atmosphere refracts some light into the shadow regions. Dust in the atmosphere can filter the refracted light. Thus during a lunar eclipse, the moon is faintly illuminated by refracted and filtered, ruddy light that has passed through Earth's atmosphere.
