Return to the Milky Way from Inside
Mapping the Celestial SphereThe GroundThe Dome of the Sky A View to the South The Southern Sky The Whole Sky Opening the Sphere Stretching it Flat An Equatorial Map We could draw a map of the whole sky on the inside surface of a sphere. To map the sky on a flat sheet is equivalent to opening up a spherical map and stretching it flat. To create a galactic map, we would slit the sphere from the galactic north pole to the galactic south pole, along the 180 degree line of galactic latitude. |
