NGC 6522 and its smaller companion NGC 6528 are globular clusters, each containing hundreds of thousands of stars. The are approximately 24,000 light years away from us. They are only 2,000 light years from the Galactic Centre. They lie in Baade's Window, a break in the thick clouds that obscure most of the central regions of the Milky Way from optical observation. They are buried with in the thick cloud of stars concentrated in the Milky Way's bulge region.
