Galaxies
Parts of the GalaxyThe GalaxyThe Central Bulge The Thin Disk Solar Neighbourhood Orbits Spiral Arms The Thick Disk The Halo The Dark Halo Star Populations A thin disk of gas, dust and stars spreads out from the central bulge. The Sun and its neighbours are located in the thin disk, so we know this part of the galaxy best. Its stars have relatively high metal abundances. They range in age from new born to almost the age of the galaxy. Star formation regions within the thin disk give rise to the galaxy's spiral arms.
