Star Populations

The most recent part of the galaxy to be discerned is a thick disk of old stars with relatively low metal abundances. It envelopes the thin disk.

A population of disk globular clusters is also found in the same region. It is not yet known whether the disk globular clusters and the stars of the thick disk belong to the same structure.
