UniverseThe Furthest SupernovaAfter the publication of the Hubble Deep Field in 1995, astronomers in observatories around the world began a detailed study of the more than 2,500 plus galaxies it contains. In 1997, using Hubble, astronomers detected an exploding star, or supernova, in one of the galaxies of the Deep Field, a faint elliptical galaxy, 10 billion light years away - the most distant supernova yet seen. The discovery supports the theory that a mysterious repulsive force, dark energy, apears to be accelerating the expansion of the universe. More:
