Once our ground based telescopes detect a supernova in a distant galaxy, higher resolution telescopes can be used to observe the event in detail. The picture on the right, taken on Nov 13, 2000 by the Hubble Space Telescope, shows the same supernova as the image on the left. Because it has better resolution than telescopes on the ground, the HST clearly separates the supernova from its host galaxy.
