CCD Cameras have revolutionarised astronomical imaging. Instead of film they use CCDs (Charge Coupled Devices) to record the image. These light sensitive integrated circuit chips are more sensitive to light than photographic film. A CCD can detect individual photons. On film, around one thousand photons must strike a point before a star image becomes visible.
