Types of Stars

A Wide Range of Sizes

Stars come in many different sizes. All produce energy by nuclear fusion. The smallest are cool, dim, long lived stars. The largest are extremely hot, very bright, short lived stars.

The Sun lies somewhere in the middle in the range of possible star sizes. It has been burning its hydrogen fuel supply for about 4.7 billion years and has enough to live to an age of ten billion years.
