Hoag's galaxy is about 120,000 light years across, making it slightly larger than the Milky Way. Both galaxies have two populations of stars:

Old stars

  • In Hoag's galaxy, the yellow nucleus is made up old stars.
  • The Milky Way's the nuclear bulge contains mainly old stars.

Young stars

  • In Hoag's Galaxy, new stars are forming in the outer blue ring.
