Hoag's galaxy is about 120,000 light years across, making it slightly
larger than the Milky Way. Both galaxies have two populations of stars:
Old stars
- In Hoag's galaxy, the yellow nucleus is made up old stars.
- The Milky Way's the nuclear bulge contains mainly old stars.
Young stars
- In Hoag's Galaxy, new stars are forming in the outer blue ring.
- The Milky Way's spiral arms are made up of newly formed stars.
